Are you thinking about going on holiday at TopParken in the near future? Then one of the first things you will probably do is look at the online reviews, for example via a travel platform such as Tripadvisor. Travellers from all over the world can leave their reviews here. It is not always possible to check whether these people have actually been on holiday at TopParken. This means that it is not certain whether these reviews have been verified. TopParken always sends a questionnaire after a stay, unlike Tripadvisor, which means those reviews are not verified.

How Tripadvisor works

Tripadvisor works with a so-called popularity score. This score is based on the quality, recentness and number of reviews a business or organisation has received and the consistency of those reviews. You simply post your review on an occasion's listing page and can choose a bullet score of one to five. You only need to enter your name, travel company and travel period. So anyone can post a review, provided Tripadvisor's guidelines are followed. The travel platform states that it should be "an honest account of a traveller's personal experience", but this is difficult to verify as there is no direct post-stay questionnaire and anyone can post something.

Quality

The sphere score classifies the quality of the experience. A company/organisation with more ratings of five spheres has a higher position than one with lower spheres.

Recentness

Recent reviews are seen as more valuable than older reviews. This means that older reviews, positive or negative, do not count to the same extent as a more recent review.

Numbers

The number of reviews is a crucial indicator. Users often read multiple reviews. However, multiple reviews does not mean that a business is ranked higher.

Consistency

Companies/organisations that consistently receive good reviews have a higher ranking than companies/organisations with a similar number of good and bad reviews.

How does a review appear on Tripadvisor?

Anyone can post a review on Tripadvisor. No questionnaire is used after a stay. As a result, reviews on this platform are not verified. One only needs to enter their name, travel party and travel period and leave a bullet point score. Then, one has to wait until they get a notification from Tripadvisor allowing them to confirm their review.

When is a review verified?

A review is labelled as verified when it is certain that a reviewer has had an actual service or buying experience with the business. Tripadvisor runs each review through its automated tracking system before publishing it on the website. When the owner or manager of a business/organisation doubts the authenticity of and review, Tripadvisor asks the reviewer to provide proof of the stay. However, Tripadvisor's website does not clearly show which reviews are verified and which are not.

Whereas at Tripadvisor the reviews on TopParken are not definitely verified, this is the case for the reviews on our official website. TopParken sends guests an e-mail with a review form after their stay, in which they can share their experiences and impressions. The reviews are verified because they are guaranteed to have visited the holiday parks and can therefore share an honest and reliable opinion.

So can I stop using Tripadvisor altogether?

Of course, you can continue to use a platform like Tripadvisor, but keep in mind that these are unverified reviews.
