The rich history of The Scheleberg Estate
From 1932 to the present day
Today, the Scheleberg Estate is known as a beautiful holiday park in the middle of the Veluwe. The park owes its name to the hill of the same name east of Lunteren, which is over 40 metres high. The fairytale estate has an interesting and turbulent history and was once part of the Wekeromse Zand nature reserve.
1932 - 1933 The construction of the youth camp
In 1932, the estate was bought by the General Union of Commercial and Office Workers with the intention of building a holiday complex here for their youth members. Due to the economic crisis of the 1930s, unemployment was high and the Ministry of Social Affairs and the union decided to set up an unemployment project together. The complex was built by young unemployed construction workers in exchange for board, lodging and 1.25 guilders pocket money per week. Every six weeks, the group of construction workers was replaced by a new group and hard work went on. Within a year, the complex was ready for 400 children to holiday.
1940-1945 World War II
The union was only able to use the holiday complex for 7 years (1933-1940), due to the onset of the war in 1940, the complex was closed. Two years later in 1942, the complex was occupied by the NSB. It established the National Socialist Training School here. A training institute where NSB mayors, among others, were taught about the ideas of National Socialism. The opening speech read as follows 'A new people, a new culture'.
1945-2004 After the war
After liberation, the camp house was temporarily occupied by the Canadians and then returned to the union. The union's youth movement ceased to exist and from the 1960s individual camping began on the estate. Things went well for the increasingly popular park and in 1984 the Scheleberg even expanded to include a hotel, conference centre and restaurant.
2004 - present The start of TopParken
In 2004, the union sold Landgoed de Scheleberg to Janus Bergervoet. Landgoed de Scheleberg became one of TopParken's first holiday parks. Today, it is still the headquarters of the family business. The holiday park has a fairytale feel thanks to its stately driveway and wooded surroundings. The holiday park also has various facilities such as an outdoor swimming pool with sunbathing area, a football and volleyball field and a restaurant. The dormitories of the former youth camp have now been replaced by comfortable chalets and luxury villas with their own wellness.
