Hiking routes on the Veluwe

Do you love hiking? Then a holiday in the Veluwe is always a good idea. With many nature reserves, vast heaths and acres of forests, this region of the country is a dream for every hiking enthusiast. From your chalet in the Veluwe, you and your travelling companions will discover a new walking route every day. Whether you go away for a weekend or two weeks, you will hardly get bored. We have therefore listed the 10 most beautiful walking routes on the Veluwe for you.

Route 1 - Deelerwoud

The Deelerwoud is a beautiful natural area for hiking. Located between the well-known National Park De Hoge Veluwe and Veluwezoom, it is a perfect alternative if you want to walk in peace. A nine-kilometre walking route leads you through vast forests and endless heathlands. Follow the green marked posts to complete this route.

Route 2 - Game spotting in Ede

Would you like to combine a walk through the natural landscapes of the Veluwe with wildlife spotting? Then the historic walking route Planken Wambuis through the nature reserve of the same name is suitable. During this 4.5-kilometre walk, you will encounter horses, cattle and red deer along the way. Download the NatuurRoutes app by Natuurmonumenten, so you know exactly where to turn right or left.

Would you like to combine this walking route on the Veluwe with a holiday or weekend getaway? Then choose to stay at Bospark Ede or Recreatiepark 't Gelloo. From these wooded parks, you can drive straight to the car park of nature reserve Planken en Wambuis and start your hike.

Route 3 - From Lunteren to Scherpenzeel

During a holiday on the Veluwe, it is also great fun to discover authentic villages. Leave the nature reserves for a while and walk from Lunteren to Scherpenzeel. Of course, you will walk through varied landscapes, but Scherpenzeel is your destination. Furthermore, you will pass a small castle in Bruinhorst along the way. An ideal place to stop for a while. This walking route is almost 15 kilometres long and therefore quite challenging. Staying overnight? You can do so in Lunteren at Landgoed de Scheleberg.

Route 4 - NS walk on the Veluwezoom

Are you familiar with NS walks? We love them! During these walks, you walk from one station to another. This way, you not only get to know new towns, but also discover the most beautiful places in nature. On the Veluwe, you can find several NS walks.

Our favourite is the NS walk Veluwezoom. Board the train to Dieren and walk to Rheden or Velp station. This walk is described by many people as one of the best NS walks. Not only will you get to know the versatile landscapes of the Veluwe, but you will also walk through the former hunting domain of the Princes of Orange. It is a tough walk with climbs and descents, but afterwards you can relax in your Veluwe cottage, tired and satisfied.

Route 5 - Sand drifts in Kootwijkerzand

When we write about the most beautiful walking routes in the Veluwe, a walk through Kootwijkerzand should not be missed. This is the largest shifting sand area in Western Europe and it really does feel a bit like being in the desert here. Visit the nature reserve and choose a nice route. Be sure to climb the watchtower in Kootwijkerzand and look out over the Veluwe.

Route 6 - City walk through Apeldoorn

Apeldoorn is a beautiful city and great to explore as a couple. Recreatiepark Beekbergen is one of our holiday parks in the Veluwe. This park is located near Apeldoorn. Although you will be holidaying here in a natural environment, we also recommend a short walk through the city. Apeldoorn is a city with a rich history. Choose the Apeldoorn 1900 walk of three kilometres and discover all the historical highlights of Apeldoorn from the 19th century.

Route 7 - On a castle tour in Wageningen

Royal castles in secluded and peaceful locations. Are you a fan of them too? Then Wageningen is the place to be. This town lies on the Veluwezoom, an area known for its many breathtaking castles. Walking routes on the Veluwe that lead you past castles are therefore plentiful. For example, choose this route, which ends at Doorwerth Castle. Would you like to visit several castles? During a holiday at Recreatiepark de Wielerbaan in Wageningen, you can.

Route 8 - Under the sign of The Second World War

The towns of Nunspeet and Vierhouten are seven kilometres apart, but we recommend this 12.7-kilometre walk. Along the way, you will stop at several places dedicated to the Second World War. One place not to be missed here is the Hidden Village, where people in hiding hid during the war.

Route 9 - Petting sheep in Hoog Buurlo

In the heart of the Veluwe and just a stone's throw from Apeldoorn, you will find Hoog Buurlo. This is an agricultural enclave, where you can take a lovely walk among the farm animals. Once you arrive in this area, choose a route. All routes are indicated by colour, which you can follow by means of marked posts. Do you fancy a short route? Then the yellow route is highly recommended. It is 4.5 kilometres long and leads you past the sheepfold, among other places.

Route 10 - Walking with your dog in Putten

Are you staying at a holiday park or campsite in the Veluwe with your dog? Then of course it is nice to go for a walk together. Head for the Putterbos. Here you can take lovely walks through the woods and your dog can expend his or her energy by having a good romp in the dog-walking area.
