Cultural outings in the Achterhoek
How proud we can be of our own Netherlands. From historic cities to natural areas and cultural gems: you won't get bored easily here. One of the regions in the Netherlands where that is completely the case is the Achterhoek. Visit picturesque castles, museums and towns full of historic sights. In short, cultural activities in the Achterhoek are plentiful. Combine these outings with a stay at a holiday park in the Achterhoek and you have a recipe for success for a great time with your partner, family or friends.
Staying overnight in the Achterhoek?
Are you planning various cultural activities in the Achterhoek? Then it is extra nice to stay in the Achterhoek on a holiday park. This way, you will have plenty of time to make fun excursions. A good idea is to stay at Résidence Lichtenvoorde. This holiday park is located in Lichtenvoorde of the same name, in the middle of the Achterhoek countryside. Rent a bike at the park and explore the surroundings.
Outing 1 - Museum MORE in Ruurlo Castle
Do you love centuries-old castles? Then you definitely won't want to skip a visit to Ruurlo Castle. This imposing structure is surrounded by water and greenery, making for a fairytale-like sight. In the past, art collector Hans Melchers renovated this castle and made it a place where you can admire works by artist Carel Willink. Welcome to Museum MORE. Here you will feast your eyes on realistic art and learn all about the life of Carel Willink.
Outing 2 - Guided tour of Groenlo's dungeons
In Groenlo, one of the Achterhoek's most unique cultural outings awaits you. This is because the dungeons under the church of Groenlo have been open to visitors since 2014. These dungeons date back to the 17th century and were discovered in 1982. Be taken through the centuries-old corridors, wells and see the rooms where people used to be imprisoned. When the dungeons were discovered, a list was even found with names of people who stayed here during the time they were waiting for their actual punishment.
Outing 3 - Haveke country estate
Are you and your partner staying in a bungalow in the Achterhoek region and looking for a cultural and romantic getaway? Then a visit to Landgoed het Haveke is highly recommended. Here you will find an imposing mansion from 1860 surrounded by a large English-style park. Stroll through the Achterhoek woods or opt for a picnic in the park.
Outing 4 - Soaking up culture in Doetinchem
At Résidence Lichtenvoorde, you can rent a chalet in the Achterhoek and visit Doetinchem from there. This city has a very rich history and is only 25 minutes by car from Résidence Lichtenvoorde. Doetinchem offers plenty of cultural outings. Be sure to visit the Doetinchem City Museum and learn more about the history of this small town. For example, did you know that the IJssel bridge was blown up by the Germans in 1940?
Outing 5 - Castle tour by bike
If there is one thing the Achterhoek is famous for, it is its castles. In this region, you will find the most beautiful specimens that you, as a culture lover, would prefer to see all of them. Recognisable? Then get on your bike for the Eight Castles Route. This is the oldest signposted cycle route in our country and leads you through forests, meadows and past old farms to eight castles. The castles you pass are: Hackfort, Den Bramel, De Wildenborch, De Wiersse, Het Onstein, De Kieftkamp, Vorden and Suideras. The official starting point is the Market Square in Vorden, but you can actually start wherever you like. Just follow the yellow hexagonal signs and be surprised.
Outing 6 - To the theatre
Looking for a fun cultural outing for the evening? Then a visit to the theatre is always a good idea. In the Achterhoek you will find several theatres where you can attend fine performances. An example is Schouwburg Lochem. Check out the current programme or drop in at the film house. Here you will watch new quality modern films every month.
Outing 7 - To the wine museum
Do you love a good glass of wine? Whoever thought that for a good wine tasting or a visit to a winery he or she should be in France or Italy is wrong. Arnhem is home to one of the oldest wineries in the Netherlands: Robbers & van den Hoogen. Step inside for a guided tour and learn all about the history of wine and the production process. Afterwards, you can sample a glass, of course. Arnhem may be just outside the Achterhoek region, but the wine museum is definitely worth a trip from Lichtenvoorde.
And which cultural outings in the Achterhoek would you like to undertake?
Will you choose an interesting museum, a special castle tour or a lovely evening at the theatre? All are great fun during your holiday in the Achterhoek. Extra nice: if you choose a weekend or midweek break at Résidence Lichtenvoorde, you may even have time to undertake all the cultural excursions in the Achterhoek!
